Summer lovin. Top ten summer memories.
Summer is my favorite time of the year. I want to savor each minute. So Stasha’s Monday Listicles this week is perfect for me.
A list of LIST OF 10 SUMMER MEMORIES.
10. Blueberry snowcones.
Peering through the window of the vendor’s trailer at New Smyrna Beach while he pours blueberry syrup on a snowpile of ice.
9. The sound of a Honda motor scooter.
The buzzzz of those rental motorbikes going back and forth on the beach all day long was almost as much part of the day as the roar of the waves.
8. Staying up late watching Johnny Carson.
When home from college, all I would have to do was wake up in time to roll into some job. I’d stay up late, sitting in bed watching Johnny and Ed.
How fun if I could do that tonight.
7. Summer Tennis Camp.
Which I actually hated. Not that I hate tennis but whole lining up and hitting the ball only to be made to play games at end of week. No thank you.
But I did it every year. Azalea Lane or Rollins College. Usually riding my bike there with my friend. She didn’t seem to mind it. Ugh.
6. Fireflies.
Fireflies don’t exist in Central Florida. I held my breath every summer visiting my Georgia grandmother as darkness descended and the light fairies began twinkling over her snapdragons.
5. Popsicles.
4. Tomato sandwiches with lots of mayo.
3. Being bored.
2. Fishing, fishing, fishing
I was definitely a tomboy and grew up with white lake sand and stinky sulfur -smelling lake water between my toes. As a girl, I would spend most summer days fishing in the little lake in front our house.
1. Trying to capture a bit of all that with my children.
Each summer, I do try and travel back down the bumpy road of the last few decades and experience the carefree, sleeping in, tennis camp, Johnny Carson-watching summer days of yore.
And every now and then…usually when I smell the tomato leaves in my garden or see the blinking firefly I take a deep breath and I am there.
What about you?

It’s funny Jamie you listed tomato sandwiches with mayo! Reading that I got a flashback to my mother, the year she was pregnant with my little brother, eating tomato, lettuce, & cheese sandwiches on white bread lathered in mayo, with the produce directly from our backyard! I can see myself, four years old, swimming in our little pool, while my mom walks around the perimeter gnoshing on her sandwich!
Great list!
I’m with you on the popsicle and fireflies – but I loved tennis camp because I had a 17 year old boy instructor – Barry Swan – oh how I secretly crushed on that boy’s forehand. (-:
Jackie ~ there are tons of little green tomatoes on our plants. Can’t wait for them to mature. From July on they will be lunch!
Okay Ado — the cute instructor would definitely have helped. The looking cute high school lifeguards made going to the pool very fun. Maybe they should have been on my list instead of tennis camp?
Oooooh, #4! I need a tomato fresh out of the garden to make me a tomato/mayo sandwich! Great memories you have. Have a wonderful Summer!
Oh my…I love this. I still eat tomato sandwiches with lots of mayo. Fireflies, popsicles, fishing…love it! And your tennis camp sounds like pure torture to me too 😉
Oh, how could I forget about fishing! and fireflies! and fresh tomato sandwiches! Summer is sooo awesome!
enjoy your camp time!!
I go fishing with my girls all the time… the boys join us from time to time but it’s usually just us. And an ice cold popsicle would have been heavenly today. I need to stock up the freezer!!! Enjoy your summer!!!
Loving the Listicles. Never done one myself. Maybe I should.
Volusia County? My mom and her mom before her were both born and raised in the same lil house a block off of Atlantic Boulevard in Daytona Beach. Both are long gone, but the house is still in the family. How I love bringing my gang there and sharing the memories with The Cherubs!
What a sweet list. I miss being bored when out of school. How I wish I could go back and savor it.
I’ve never had a tomato sandwich but I sure love tomaters. I just might have to give it a try!
Lovely post and it makes me sad but it is true. I feel so sorry for older people sitting in restaurants alone. Because you can pretty sure guess they are a widow.
