Running in the Windy City. (Or running like the wind?) Nope. Running in the Windy City.

Running in the Windy City. (Or running like the wind?) Nope. Running in the Windy City.

I run.

One of the great things about running is that you can do it pretty much anywhere. Some of my best memories from trips  over the last three decades are when I’ve put on my running shoes and taken off huffing and puffing around the local color.

Last weekend, hubby and I were in Chicago.

And wait a minute, don’t faint . . .

He joined me on my Saturday morning run.

It was significantly cooler than Georgia and windy. Imagine that.

Nice posed shot. Notice the wind.

Yes, we took off down the river looking at all the sights and trying not to step out in front of cars.

Did you know that 3,000 are hit by autos each year in the city of Chicago? I didn’t either till I read it imprinted into the sidewalk every corner.

As we zig-zagged through the streets we finally made it to Lake Michigan. It is Lake Michigan right? Aren’t there four others?

Another posed shot. Notice the lake.

I had to take a photo of the beach.

It was pretty chilly and I made some joke about how surprising it was no one was sunbathing.

So we joined the throngs running along Lakeshore Drive.

And then I noticed this.

A human swimming.

Like was he training for a polar bear triathlon? He wasn’t even wearing a wetsuit. Though he had a cap and goggles.

That just wasn’t right.

Though the water was AMAZINGLY clear. Don’t know how clean it was — but it was blue and you could see that sandy bottom.

Even my husband had to agree it was a great start to the morning.

And we burned off at least 300 of the 30,000 calories of our lunch of deep dish pizza.

How about you? How do you exercise when traveling?

  1. I’ve started running in the morning three days a week (on the treadmill) (It’s Florida, what do you want from me?) And I honestly love the feeling i get when I’m finished. I can’t wait for the next trip to do the same thing you did. And that guy is crazy.

Keep it up Amanda. You will get hooked on running. And as for that guy, I’ve been around a lot of gung ho athletic types but that takes it to a new level. I’d love to talk to him.

I would love to run there and have a running partner! We bike or hike or um…drink til we throw up? Thats a good way to get rid of calories, or so I hear 😀

I exercise mostly my arms while traveling. It takes a lot of energy to scoop all that food into my mouth.

Gosh, you’re pretty though. Even all windblowny.

    You are so beautiful!

I think it’s amazing that you run on vacation. I run to the fridge on vacation :ducks:

But what a neat experience to run in different places and take in a new scenery. Great post!

Thanks Colleen. And it really is fun. Walking, cycling. It all counts. You can really see so much of a place when you don’t have an agenda other than exercising and observing.

  7. Jamie Miles says:

Another sweet compliment. Thanks Julie. It must be the windblown look. I need move to Chicago or carry an electric fan wherever I go.

  8. Greta says:

I’ve recently started “running” but I have a hard time leaving my comfort zone in a strange place. I need to do it, though. I will do it!

Love to see your smiling face, Jamie!

  9. Farrah says:

Ah, I do not exercise while I travel. In fact, I do not officially exercise at all. Some day that shall change.
I love the posed shot with wind in your hair. Quite the ‘windy city’! And brrr.. I’m down south here with you (South Carolina) and from Michigan- so that makes me shiver. I remember how chilly it gets!
