Memorial Day. Climb every mountain. Every Stone Mountain.

Memorial Day. Climb every mountain. Every Stone Mountain.

Memorial Day.

I just could stay at home and sit on the couch.

Well. I wouldn’t be sitting on the couch anyway.

I wanted to go to North Georgia and hike. But there wasn’t enough time.

So next best thing was to head to Stone Mountain. My youngest and husband were the only two that I could talk into joining me.

So we headed up and up.

It was a lovely day.

To be out and about.

I couldn’t help but think of Army Spec. Erica Alecksen today. She was killed in Afghanistan last July 8.

In working on a story, I spoke with her mother and her aunt. Her pastor and her husband. The funeral director.

She had just turned 21.

It’s hard to think of a mother who lost her only daughter to a IED so deep that even the dogs couldn’t sniff it out.

Today was just a nice day with family.

Thinking Erica’s mother and brother and of all those who are missing a family member today killed in the line of service.

Memorial Day should never be just the day that marks the beginning of summer.

It sounds like a glorious day you had with your family. But it also reminds me that for every glorious day, someone somewhere is experiencing a sadness – in this case, the deepest sadness possible. It also reminds me that we are all connected by loss, somehow – and how nice it would be if like you, we always remembered to be compassionate to others based on this very basic connection.

It was Alexandra. Or I should say it always is. Every now and then I get the urge to scale the gentle beast and look down on everything. It is quite fun.

  4. There are a few trails within an hour north and east of here – just the better ones take 1.5 hours. (we like to hike where we don’t see people – stone mountain raises my blood pressure in a bad way- due to the disneyworld-like factor – does that make sense?) Better than working in the yard, though -which was my memorial day!

ha. I’d love to learn of those trails Trish. And yes, it was high WDW factor at Stone Mountain on Memorial Day. I guess growing up in the Tourist Capital of the World I’m a bit immune to such things. If I can find a parking place, I’m usually good to go no matter the crowd.

  6. Your right, Memorial Day should never just be what marks the beginning of summer. Looks like a great day and a great way to spend some time with your husband and son. I love a good hike…there are none where I currently live…it drives me nuts. Thanks so much for linking up at the Real Family Fun link party! Hope to see you next week.
