The Midlife Crisis Gardener Diaries. Chapter 12: Sunflowers
Ten Things Thankful. Sunflower edition.
Okay. The dirt is prepared. My vegetables planted.
Everything done.
Then this morning I saw these.
My Sunflower seeds.
Completely forgot about them.
So I hurried out there. Found my pick axe and got them in the ground.
10 reasons why I am sooo very thankful I found my sunflowers.
10. They make me happy when their little green heads break through the dirt.
9. They make me happy when they grow three inches over night.
8. They make me happy when their big leaves stretch out from their sturdy stalks.
7. They make me happy when I see their head begin to form.
6. They make me happy when their faces rotate to follow the sun each day.
5. — 1. They are easy to grow. And did I say they make me happy?
And here is my expert video on how to plant your sunflowers.
Does your summer include sunflowers? I hope it does.
I haven’t planted sunflowers yet this year, but maybe I should! They are a happy flower, aren’t they?
The happiest of the happy I think Kristi.
The Accidental Composter…. wasn’t William Hurt in that?
LOVE the vid! Make sure you take photos when they come up…maybe a time laps video!!!! Hey if you had chickens they would be digging those suckers up! Although they tend to leave the rest of our garden alone!
They’d be digging up my seeds. Darn that. Guess even chickens aren’t perfect. And yes, William Hurt had an amazing accidental compost pile. 🙂
Your video made me smile so much – your CAPTIONS dude! Love it.
“Accidental composter” 😀
I am always happy for sunflowers, not only because they track the sun, but also because the seeds are arranged in the heads in the golden ratio, magic, double-spiral, fibonacci sequence of awesome MATH IN NATURE, which I love.
Bit of a geek turn-on, when that happens 🙂
Lizzi — I had researched that once (or came upon that fact) when I was writing a column about them. Okay. I didn’t understand the heck of it. But I knew enough to reverence the plan behind it all.
Beautiful sunflowers and love that you grow these. Can’t wait and hope you will share them here as they grow in now, too 🙁
We have a neighbour that plants sunflowers that grow huge on the side of his lawn. They make me smile. We’re more roses and other perrenials inherited from the last owner of our home.
I am looking forward to planning a veggie garden this year – hopefully I’ll do it this year (I’ve taken the last four years off, but use to do it).
Thank you for the gardening motivation!
I love our sunflowers! We planted some a couple of years ago, and they grew beautifully tall. Each year, more grow in that spot. They make me smile even more, since I didn’t even have to do the planting.
Accidental composting? Love that! Now I have an explanation for my backyard.
I am NOT a gardener. In fact, I hate, hate, haaaaate gardening. That’s my husband’s job, and he’s been a slacker for the past couple of years. Need to get him out there and clear out a bunch of stuff, because he’s already seen one snake by our trash can and if I see one, I will probably not go outside until it frosts.
Sunflowers do make me happy, though.
If it’s a black snake — that’s a good thing. They are very sweet and keep all pests away. Including the bad snakes. 🙂
Aren’t volunteers fun Christine? I’ve already found one volunteer watermelon and something I think might be a pumpkin — we’ll see.
It funny’s Louise — I was just at the garden center finding some annuals for our summer containers. That used to be my favorite thing. And now I’m much more preoccupied with my veggies. Hope you get something in the ground. Try a pepper or a tomato plant in a pot. Easy and fun for the kids to watch.
Hopefully I got enough in the ground that I can give a followup photo Janine. Your girls would love watching them. You might think of putting a few seeds out.
Ooooohhh you make me want to plant sunflowers! I so want to because I’ve seen my aunt plant some beautiful ones. I can’t do it just yet so I hope I will remember to ask you any questions if I need advice 🙂
I’m coming to see those babies peeping through the ground!
Haven’t planted sunflowers since the kids were little! Just might have to do so thanks to your inspiration!
I wish I could garden. I plant things and I do fairly well with herbs but I’ve never been successful at making things grow 🙁 I love sunflowers and would love to try…after this I think I just might.
You are so funny and I love your video! Love hearing your voice! xoxo tiffani
My voice. ARGH. But thanks dearie.
[…] Last week, I wrote a post extolling how wonderful sunflowers are to grow. […]
You know….Kansas is the Sunflower State! Wild sunflowers remind me of my childhood. Sunflowers in the garden remind me of my daughter who had the greenest thumb of any four year old I ever did know.
[…] sunflowers almost got the best of me this year, as I showed in this silly vlog for the Ten Things of Thankful […]
