NaBloPoMo — Day 1: I am a food blogger.

NaBloPoMo — Day 1: I am a food blogger.

I was a food blogger. For one day. Just because that day was Halloween doesn’t necessarily make it a trick.

Today is November 1. The first day of blogging every day for NaBloPoMo. National Blog Posting Month. Once again, I’m linking up with BlogHer and the wonderful community at Yeah Write.

Yesterday morning I opened up my daily Allrecipes email and saw this.

Stuffed Jack-o-lantern Bell Peppers.

Stepperanddaniel's photo with her recipe.

I’m not a food blogger but these little smiling fellows called to me.

Don’t know why but I tweeted @Allrecipes and indicated, I might try them. Well, @Allrecipes tweeted right back and said they are easy peasy. They encouraged me to give them a try and tweet them a photo.

Well. I like a good challenge.

@Allrecipes doesn’t know that I’m a consumer of food more than creator of fabulous edible creations but

why the heck not?

It’s Halloween for pitty’s sake.

Mom and I were shopping all day for things for her new house. This included a stop by Trader Joe’s for that’s what country mice do when the come to town. They stop and horde nuts and Mediterranean Greek yogurt dip from Trader Joe’s.

Then I saw them. All these beauties ripe for carving.

Got them and all the other things I didn’t have on had at home.

A few hours later, the kids were dressed for Halloween.

I have a fast rule about no evil or blood.

But since the kids were older, I let them come up with their own costumes instead of spending lots of money online.

Nice.

So already parent fail with non-gory costume, I sent the kiddies off to trick for treats, while I strapped on my apron to create my little peppers.

And create I did.

Not going to show you photos of the creating because I am not a food blogger and really wouldn’t want to spoil your appetite. Not the point of this post.

Placed them in the oven and when out to join my husband by the fire and hand out candy.

I didn’t eat but one Butterfinger. I was saving up for my peppers.

At the end of the hour, I went to fetch my little pretties.

Hmm.

Not so pretty.

But I pulled one out.

Got him all propped up.

Got the lighting just right in my kitchen. And after an hour in make-up and filters getting just the right hue of umber on his skin  . . .

I sent my tweet.

They were delicious.

And that was it. My day as a food blogger.

Pretty sensational if I do say so myself.

Do you have any favorites to serve for Halloween night?

Those are so cute Jamie! When I set up my blog, I was totally going to be a healthy living blogger (which includes food). After a little while I realized that is so not me! But maybe I’ll do a couple of recipes this month – I don’t have stories for 30 days in a row!

  2. So cute! And the wrinkles add character.

Soooo I laughed throughout this post. Still giggle at “that’s what country mice do when they come to town”, the pepper-jack-en peering through the bottom of the glass casserole dish and “got him all propped up”. I don’t think I’d last a day at food blogging. Maybe as a gag (pun intended)?! Happy posting!

yes… Cynthia. A very wise old bell pepper she is.

Whenever I try to take photos, there is so much scatter about on the counter tops. My cutting board has the big melted gash from when I left it in the oven. Just nothing to make it pretty food. My food is so not pretty.

  6. Jamie Miles says:

LOL Sabrina. Yeah. I bet there would be lots of gagging at most posts too.

  7. You areso much more ambitious than I.

  8. Jamie Miles says:

    I surprised myself last night.

I think they turned out cute! I LOVE to cook but I don’t follow recipes & my camera sucks so I guess I’m out of the running to be a food blogger. We usually order pizza on Halloween…so not original I know.

Age-ism has run rampant in food photos for long enough, so I, for one, am glad to see your pruny pepper. Nicely done!

  11. I LOVE stuffed peppers but had to chuckle when I saw the picture of what they looked like when you first took them out of the oven. You fixed them up nice though and I bet they tasted great!

  12. Those are adorable — and I love stuffed peppers… may try for Christmas? haha. And I love the idea of handing out candy by the fire. A tradition?

  13. Jamie Miles says:

Definitely worth starting a tradition Julia.

  14. JAke says:

I would NEVER be able to do these, haha. I’m a TERRIBLE cook. But maybe that would make a very interesting blog post.

  15. jani says:

I love it! Thanks for a good laugh. 🙂
You are a woman of many talents!

  16. Jamie Miles says:

Thanks Jani. Now I can add stuff pepper carver to my repertoire.
