Musing on Plants I killed this Summer. #PPP
One of my favorite people and renown (in these parts) Master Gardner, Flossie Dodge asked if she could put one of these large placards in my yard.
The Morgan County Master Gardeners are having a plant sale to raise money for projects — one being a heirloom medicinal garden (funky medicine plants from last century) at Madison’s Heritage Hall.
As fellow Magnolia Garden Club member, I was thrilled to help out.
There are Master Gardeners and then there are people who should be thankful there isn’t a Department for Potted Ferns and Begonia Services.
I’ll try to identify the charred remains of the potted plants decorating my yard.
I think this was Flossie’s favorite.
To avoid any confusion after looking at these specimens, the sale is NOT AT MY HOUSE weekend after next but on Hancock Street in Madison behind the old jail.
And how did your garden grow this summer?

Garden, what garden?
I have a brown thumb. Thank goodness for my husband who is skilled in this area.
And thank goodness our back yard is in the back. 🙂
Daphne
I know Daphne…it’s horrible. With everything going on I just tuned it out. We haven’t gotten any rain. I usually enjoy making the rounds with the hose in the mornings. But this year, even that’s not happened. (to state the obvious.)
A bit ironic that the sign is there now- but yea, my thumb is pretty black- I leave the flower care for others 🙂
Oooh, I’m sorry to say, but that is some serious plant carnage!
This year seems to be bad for gardens all around. I had alot of damage to my shrubs from the snow over the winter ..and thst snow made everything grow wild. Too much water is bad in more ways than one. And to add to it, I had no time for my garden at all. Between. Putting together the book for my sister-in-law ( Jaime) for her wedding, and then the edits for the cruise..I just covered my eyes when I walked by it. Really looking forward to cutting it all back in a few weeks.
Guilty as charged, Liz.
Such a funny post! We’re in an apartment, so we don’t have garden issues. Though, I have been known to neglect a houseplant or two.
Diana, this has been a bad year…even for me. Usually if I get neglectful about watering there is a little rain to help things. There has been no rain. Not a good summer to be neglectful.
I live in a town that hosts a flower carnival every year that draws visitors from across the country.
They would NOT want to visit my garden.
Enough said.
Some people are flower people. It’s good for flowers and for people would appreciate them.
I feel your pain.
I came home to (not the beautiful sunflower to greet me that I had last year) pots that had been “tended” by the guard… let me just say, I NEED HORSE POOP! He’d put this red clay (think Georgia) in my pots and scrambled it around and nothing is growing except these hyper strawberry plants that DON’T produce. My basil is all gone to seed and nothing remains of the cilantro or dill. 🙁
It’s a sad state of affairs. Oh, for a Master Gardner in the area.
I’m so sorry Janice. It is the vacations that kill them. They never recover. But you can grow all year, I would guess — and this is starting your summer right? So maybe you can salvage something. Miss seeing you at Walmart with the cute hair cut.
Take care.
All of my plants at work are alive and thriving. Ofcourse I do have a plant service
I’m not sure if that’s great advertising for the sale, or not so good. 🙂
Mine did okay this year, but I can’t keep up with the weeds.
Oh Jamie! It’s been so hot, it’s no wonder you have a few wilted plants. I have a veggie garden. I can tell you, that living in Texas with this crazy uber hot summer, it was hard to keep everything perky and watered.
Thank you for visiting my blog!
The only thing I had luck with in the veggie garden was corn and tomatoes. The corn really turned out — amazingly. The tomatoes were small but tasty. Everything else tanked.
