Today’s Muse. Medicinal Chicken Fried Steak.

Leaving church yesterday, my neighbor asked my daughter to join them for lunch at Cracker Barrel. She ran down to me with big brown eyes and asked to go. Then my neighbor suggested we all eat lunch together.

My stomach started getting all flippy-floppy. Little fingers from mad demonic creatures started to thump on my skull.

“No..”  was what I wanted to scream.

My kitchen was a wreck. The house littered in bits of paper (toilet paper) because the dog has found my stash. Laundry. Dear heavenly father — how I hate laundry. And I was behind in my writing for the week.

“Sure, let’s go,” my husband said.

A slight wave of panic inched across my face. My neighbor standing two pews away in the emptying church said — “Come on. Don’t want to hear anything about stress…”

I swallowed the panic monster down deep and breathed. “Okay.”

We got to Cracker Barrel and I ordered Chicken Fried Steak because it makes me think of college and Texas. When I didn’t worry about gaining weight or stress about not handling a household of WILD CHILDREN.

The food was great. It was awesome talking with my dear neighbors whom I never see. Letting our kids play. Losing at checkers to my 7 year old.

As we were leaving I hugged my friend. “Thank you for not letting me bug out.” Was all I said, but I felt so much more.

Sometimes getting out of bed to go to church, then going out to eat — is good. To slam that stress monster flat and flippn’ step on his face.

Try to mess with me. Take my happiness.

Though  it took yanking me… kicking and screaming.

In my mind.

Musing on the Gators v. Tide. Live.

The Gators are playing the Tide. I thought I’d blog.

I’ve had some wine.

This may not be a good idea.

But in the interest of journalistic integrity, I shall be transparent. In all it’s ugliness.

Okay. Alabama just kicked a field goal.

9:21 left in the 1st. Ala. 3 the Gators 0.

Last time I was in Tuscaloosa, I had just gotten married, the Gulf War was in full swing and Galen Hall was the Gators coach.

The Gators beat them. At that point, the new Alabama head coach Gene Stallings was 0-3.

We heard a radio show caller after the game say that “Coach Stallings should be taken out and shot at dawn.”

Just now the Gators went for it on 4th down and didn’t make it. My son is shoveling M&Ms in his mouth. It’s irritating the heck out of me. Noises do that.

My son and husband won’t stop talking.

HELP————->>>>>>>ME.

They sit and talk like they’re analyzing the game for TV. That’s why the sound is turned down on Gary Danielson and Verne Lundquist. Just irritating.

Now hubs has switched to some Sylvester Stallone movie on AMC. He’s shirtless in snow. (Sylvester Stallone not my husband.)

14:14 in 2nd quarter Alabama 10 Florida 0.

The UF defense needs to stop the other team when they have the ball. (That’s my analysis.) But I feel UF is going to drive and score on this next possession.

Lots of cleancut Alabama students were seen shaking their pompoms. Along with a few of the coeds’ breasts shaking. But that seems to be standard these days.

This one thing I’ve got to say for Ingram…22 is a great number. That’s about all I can say for him.

Just saw score..Stanford 21 Oregon 3.  I mean, with a name like Ducks do they really think they would stay number 4?

This game has gotten boring. I just ate a rather large piece of the prime rib from my hub’s takeout from the ChopHouse. I feel for Faye after Tennessee’s loss.

Wish it were more exciting…I think I might hit bed.

TD Alabama. 6:09 in 2nd.

Good night.

(Okay, I really stayed up till half and saw the Gators kick a field goal.)

Musing on the grade…Morgan County beats NE Macon in a Trilla.

Once again the Miles family travelled with LOTS of Morgan County faithful to see the Bulldogs take on the NE Macon Raiders…..

The sky was really amazing upon arrival.

Parking:

Now those of us arriving close to kick off had to park across the street. We got to walk in a very cool bridge complete with graffiti and metal fencing. The kids loved it on the way over but were a little scared on the way back because it was rather dark. To me….the darkness added to the ambiance. So for ease, safety and over all urban feel, I’d have to give the parking a solid…

Morgan County fans:

Well, once again there was an OUTSTANDING crowd that followed Malone and Company an hour and 15 minutes south. This is a shot of the home stands. There were more of us on the visiting side though I don’t have a picture to show for sure. Morgan County travelling crowd was a solid..

Musing on one teacher schoolhouses.

Yesterday I spend a lovely few hours interviewing family members of Genie Maude Wilson.

Genie Maude  lived in Morgan County many years ago…tons of great stuff on her for a story in the local paper on a just-published book compiling the best of her columns she wrote for 65 years.

But this simple post is photographs from another part of her life — school teacher. Mrs. Wilson taught for many years starting in 1913 till the county closed her school — first known as Mitchem School and later Fairview School — in 1928.

This is a picture from a picture in the book of the school in 1915. It gives a glimpse of life in Georgia deep in the rural South almost a century ago.

When I learned the schoolhouse was just a mile or so down the road from the family farm where we had lunch, I drove down there.

Two of Genie Maude’s granddaughters, Sally Stephens along with Rachel Harper, labored untold hours searching through her columns and putting the book together.

When I mentioned driving by the old school on the way home, Sally remarked what a shame that it had fallen into such a state.

I had been by this building easily a hundred times for it is right off US 441 just a few miles south of town. Never seen it.

This is what a 100 years — the last 70 or so with no real care — can do to a place. Hate to think of what 100 years will do to me.

Such a thriving place, bustling with energic, lovable, joking country children.

Life is so short.

Let’s wake up to the beauty in the unphotographed right before us.
