Musing on the birth of a garden.
I needed to have done this weeks ago.
The nursery.
My youngest and I went out on the porch yesterday — in between loads of laundry.
We tilled, hoed and sewed the seeds of our future harvest this summer.
Somethings I buy and transplant, others we drop directly into the soil – then I always like to create a few transplants of our own.
Hence the nursery.
Last year I tried all sorts of stuff. Carrots dismal failure; wrong time of year. Duh.
But the squash birthed on our porch produced all summer long. And did the cucumbers — buku cucumbers.
For some reason I ended up with 20 zucchini squash and one yellow. This year trying to make sure I have plenty of yellow as well.
Watermelon. They were my nemesis. Didn’t have much luck with them. They climbed on the fence and try to produce.
So the garden’s started. Summer is creeps closer.
I had quite a bit of beginner’s luck last year. I hope I can take what we learned and do even better.
Eat more, give more away, freeze more, maybe even can some.
I’m excited. Though a bit puzzled at who I’ve become.
This woman who gets excited every morning to go out and inspect what’s ready to pick.
Shhh. The babies are sleeping on the porch.
What are your gardening plans this summer?

Where is the corn?
We put the seed right in the ground. You really failed with the corn last year. I expect better things from you this summer. Focus.
I have beans! Right now, 11 bushy plants and enough beans ready now for one serving… and peanuts pushing thru. Also chives. Bell peppers planned as soon as I get a few more pots. No on-ground garden in the swamp; all container garden.
Wow Michelle, like green beans? I had lots of luck with peppers in containers. Honestly, they did better like that than those I tried in the garden last summer. Now I’m really intrigued with the peanuts. In pots?
